Cupboard
A cupboard was originally an elliptical, box-like container that was used in the church to store sacred utensils, priest's vestments, etc. and was therefore barred at the front. The cupboard later received doors decorated with paintings and was placed on four low posts, which only became turned feet in the Renaissance period. Deviating from this, a studded cupboard was a cupboard standing on high posts. Later, when the cupboard was put into profane use, what remained of the barring was a small barred opening in the cupboard door, behind which images of saints, relics, showpieces and the like were displayed.
Under the influence of the Gothic style, the cupboard was structured architecturally (facade cupboard) and the paneling of the doors was decorated with either carvings, inlays or paintings, which were then further developed into ever greater variety from the Renaissance period onwards. The Renaissance cabinet remained decisive for the later design of this piece of furniture up to the present day. Currently, the name cabinet is used for any storage furniture whose front can be closed with doors (clothes cabinet, money cabinet, kitchen cabinet, bookcase, refrigerator, etc.). Many of today's cabinet models are mostly made of chipboard that is coated with veneer or plastic. The individual components, such as side panels, base, cover, doors, etc., are often assembled using small plastic or metal parts (“fittings”).
